Videodisc Player
This unit or one like it is available for
classroom use or rental. It can be delivered to a classroom or
picked up at our main offices in the Martin Luther King Jr. Building.
Format Explanation
Rotation modes: Laserdiscs can be mastered
for either constant linear velocity
(CLV, variable rpm), like a CD, or constant
angular velocity (CAV,
constant rpm), like an LP. All consumer players can handle either
format. Some releases even mix the modes, with the initial sides being CLV
and the final side being CAV. Some films are initially released in both
CLV and CAV "collectors" editions. CAV is also known as
"standard play" or "full feature play". Only CAV
provides all motion control capabilities on all players (at the expense of
more platters and shorter 30 minute sides). CAV also provides constantly
improving signal-to-noise ratio as the program proceeds toward the outer
edge, but this is typically not that noticeable on properly manufactured
discs. CLV is also known as "extended play". One hour per side
playing time results in lower prices and less flipping. In return, you
give up all the other CAV features, unless you have a high-end player with
digital field store. The majority of disc titles are available only in CLV.
